“If you foolishly ignore beauty, you will soon find yourself without it, your life will be impoverished. But if you invest in beauty, it will remain with you all the days of your life.” Frank Lloyd Wright
My work is informed by the rough and sublime hand of nature, by work in the garden, by lessons that come from seed and soil, as well as by walks in the woods. There is always a search and appreciation for the prodigious imprint of design and the inevitable mark of beauty. Exploring paradigms of each becomes part of my process and is impetus for the work, often juxtaposing Biblical and secular references. Whether the work is in wood, clay, fiber or stone, utilitarian or not, there is intriguing contrast in using materials that were once living and reanimating them into new form.
Working in these mediums requires direct involvement and the visceral process of each becomes part of understanding the form. It is a very candid response. Used for ages in art, craft, utility, and architecture, I believe these materials are timeless and herald present interpretations. My tools are handsaws, chainsaws, chisels, hand building and wheel techniques.
